Get everyone out first. No gas: switch the breaker off This is urgent, because heat that cannot be stopped can set fire to a pan or anything left beside it. On an electric or induction cooktop, switch the breaker off and clear the counter; for a gas burner that stays lit, keep back and phone the gas utility or 911. The cooktop stays off until the stuck part has been replaced. ## What it usually means. Heat that ignores the control is the one cooktop failure that can start a fire with nobody standing near it. On a coil or radiant top, the infinite switch behind the knob has contacts that can weld together, so the element stays at full power wherever the knob points. On touch-control and induction cooktops, a relay or the power stage on a board can latch on. On gas, the knob valve may not close all the way, or a knob that slipped on its stem reads off while the valve is still open. Glass that simply stays hot for a while after cooking is ordinary residual heat; heat that climbs, or a flame that keeps burning, is not. The 6 causes, cheapest first Answer these first 01 Is it a gas flame, a coil, a radiant ring under glass, or an induction zone? 02 Does the knob reach its off stop and feel like the others, or does it spin loosely? 03 On a touch model, does the display show the zone as off while it keeps heating? 04 Is the element getting hotter, or only staying warm as it cools? 05 Did it begin after a spill ran over the controls or into the knob openings? ## Check these before you book. Most electric and induction cooktops are wired straight to a box in the cabinet, not plugged into an outlet, so the breaker is how power is cut. Use the breaker labeled for the cooktop, or the main if you cannot find it. ### Should I close the gas valve under the cooktop myself? Not while a burner is still lit above it, because that means reaching into a cabinet beneath an open flame.
