A cooktop error code names the self-test the control could not pass. On a cooktop those tests cover the cooking surface and nothing else: radiant element temperature and limiters, the induction power board, coils and pan sensing, the cooling fan, the touch keys, ignition on electronically controlled gas models, and the link between boards. Not every code is a failure: a control lock, a showroom mode and a pan symbol are prompts. Codes are not shared across makers, and one maker may reuse a code with another meaning on another model line, so read any code together with the model number. The 6 causes, cheapest first Answer these first 01 Which characters are on the display, and could any letter really be a digit, like a B for an 8? 02 Does the code come back after power has been cut at the breaker for five minutes? 03 Does it name one zone, or does it stop the whole cooktop? 04 When does it appear: at power-up, when a pan goes on, or after cooking for a while? 05 Can you find the model label? On a cooktop it is often under the burner box, reached from the cabinet below, or on a card tucked into that cabinet. ## Check these before you book. Cooktop error code: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything. 01 Copy the code down character for character, or take a photo of the display. 02 If the code comes with heat that will not stop, a burning smell or smoke, switch off the breaker; with any gas odor, leave and call the gas utility from outside. 03 Find the model and serial label, often under the burner box or on a card in the cabinet below. ### Also worth checking - Cut power at the breaker for five minutes, restore it, and see whether the code returns. - Check the code against the manual for your exact model, because some codes are prompts rather than failures. ### How soon does it need a visit? Most cooktop codes can wait for a scheduled visit. Treat it as urgent when the code warns of overheating, arrives with smoke or a scorched smell, or a zone goes on heating; turn off the breaker.
