Get everyone out first. No gas: switch the breaker off A cooktop that trips its breaker repeatedly has a short, and each reset heats it again. Keep the breaker off, call 911 for smoke or flame, and leave the cooktop unused until it has been tested. A lone trip during a thunderstorm that has not happened since is not an emergency. ## What it usually means. An electric or induction cooktop draws heavy current through a dedicated two-pole breaker, and a breaker that trips is answering either too much current or a short to ground. On a built-in cooktop the likely spots are all hidden: an element shorting inside its sheath or under the glass, a scorched junction box in the cabinet below, a wet control, or an induction power board that fails under load. A gas cooktop can trip a breaker too, through its small spark and light circuit, and that usually points to moisture at the spark switches or the module. Resetting over and over only reheats the damaged spot. Once, yes, with every burner and zone switched off. If it trips again, or trips the moment a zone comes on, leave it off and book a visit. ### Why would a gas cooktop trip a breaker at all? The spark ignition, and on some models a light or a downdraft blower, run on house power. Water in the spark switches or a failing module can trip that circuit. ### How can I tell whether it is the cooktop or the house wiring? A trip only when one zone is on points to that zone. A trip with everything off, or one that began after electrical work in the home, points to the circuit, which is a job for an electrician. ### My new induction cooktop keeps tripping the breaker. Why? Induction models can draw more than an older coil top, and the existing circuit may be smaller than the new cooktop needs.
