A healthy gas flame is blue with crisp inner cones and runs evenly around the burner. Yellow tips, lazy orange flames or soot on the pans mean the gas is starved of air, most often because the ports are clogged or the cap is off center. A flame that is tall on one side, lifts away from the burner or blows out easily points to blocked ports, a warped cap, or pressure that does not suit the orifices. On a cooktop converted between natural gas and propane, a missed orifice change leaves every burner yellow and oversized. A downdraft vent right beside the burners can also drag flames sideways. Brief orange streaks caused by dust or humidifier mist do no harm. A flame that stays yellow, or leaves soot behind, needs attention. ### Does a yellow flame produce carbon monoxide? Incomplete burning makes more carbon monoxide than a clean blue flame. Keep a CO alarm in the home, run the vent while you cook, and book a check of any flame that stays yellow. ### We switched to propane and the flames look huge. Why? Propane needs smaller orifices and a different regulator setting. If any part of that conversion was skipped, every burner will run oversized and yellow until it is finished. ### Can the downdraft vent affect my flames? Yes. A downdraft set high pulls air across the cooktop and can tip flames over or blow out a low simmer.
