An induction cooktop heats only when it senses a magnetic pan of a suitable size centered on the zone; otherwise it shows a pan symbol and cancels the zone after a short wait. Most of the time the pan is the answer: aluminum, copper, glass and some stainless steel will not work, and a base that is warped or too small may not register. When a known good pan on a zone that used to work still is not detected, the coil, its sensing circuit or the power board that drives it may have failed. A built-in induction cooktop also needs air from the cabinet below, and blocked vents let its electronics overheat and drop zones. The 6 causes, cheapest first Answer these first 01 Does a magnet cling firmly to the bottom of the pan? 02 Does the pan cover most of the zone's marked circle? 03 Does the problem follow the pan, or stay with the zone? 04 Does the display show a code as well as the pan symbol? 05 Is the cabinet below packed tight, or a drawer pushed up against the cooktop's underside? ## Check these before you book. Induction cooktop not detecting pan: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything. 01 Hold a magnet to the base of the pan; if it does not grip firmly, try a different pan. 02 Center a pan at least as wide as the zone's inner marking and try again. 03 Swap the pan onto another zone, and another pan onto this one, to see which one is at issue. ### Also worth checking - Clear anything stored against the cooktop's underside and make sure its vent openings are free. - Write down any code that appears alongside the pan symbol. ### How soon does it need a visit? A zone that will not detect a pan is not an emergency. Cook on another zone and book a visit. Some stainless pans are only weakly magnetic, and larger zones need more pan to sense. A pan that just passes on a small zone can fail on a large one. ### Can I use a converter disk for pans that are not magnetic? A converter disk works but heats slowly and gets very hot itself. Read what your cooktop's manual says before using one. ### Why does the zone switch itself off after a minute? Without a pan it can sense, the cooktop cancels the zone for safety. If a pan is there and it still cancels, the coil or the board needs testing. ### Could the cabinet under the cooktop affect pan detection? Indirectly. Blocked airflow lets the electronics overheat, and they shut zones down to protect themselves.
