Diagnostic fee ### Diagnostic visit A visit that runs every burner or zone on the cooktop, looks under it from the cabinet below and names the failed part before anything is ordered. Cost: low ### Burner and igniter repair Gas cooktop and rangetop burners that will not light, light late or burn with a ragged flame, traced to the electrode, the burner head, the cap or the ports. Cost: low to moderate ### Spark module and gas valve repair The parts deeper in a gas cooktop: the spark module that fires the electrodes, the switches on the valve stems, the valves that meter the flame and the regulator. Cost: low to moderate ### Radiant element repair Zones under a smooth glass cooktop that stay dark, heat weakly or cut out, traced to the ribbon element, its limiter or the relay that feeds it. Cost: moderate to highest ### Glass top replacement A new glass-ceramic surface for a radiant, induction or gas-on-glass cooktop that has cracked, chipped at the edge or been pitted beyond cleaning. Cost: lowest ### Coil element and receptacle repair Coil elements on an electric cooktop that stay cold, spark at the plug or heat unevenly, along with the receptacles, drip bowls and wiring they plug into. Cost: moderate to highest ### Induction board and coil repair Induction zones that stop sensing pans, cut out, buzz or show codes, traced to the power boards, the coils, their sensors and the links to the controls. Cost: moderate ### Touch control repair Glass touch keys and sliders that ignore a finger, start zones by themselves or stay locked, traced to the keys, the control board or the lock setting. Cost: low ### Infinite switch and knob repair Knob-controlled cooktop zones that heat only on high, will not simmer or will not switch off, and the worn knobs and switches behind them. Cost: low to moderate ### Cooling fan and downdraft repair The fan that cools an induction or touch-control cooktop's boards, and the downdraft vent that rises behind the cooking surface or pulls air down between the burners. The fair comparison for a cooktop repair is not a new cooktop's shelf tag but a new one that fits your existing cutout. Counter openings differ between makes by fractions of an inch, a model that needs a larger hole means recutting stone or replacing a section of countertop, and a change of fuel brings a gas fitter or an electrician into the job. That is why electrodes, coils, switches, elements and fans are nearly always worth replacing, and why a new cooktop tends to win only when the glass and a board fail together, a discontinued model has no boards left, or a gas burner box has corroded through. Book the diagnostic visit. Describe what the cooktop does, and the technician works out which of these repairs it needs before ordering a part or quoting a price. ### The cooktop needs two repairs. Can they be done in one visit? Yes, and on a cooktop they often turn up together: a pot that boiled over may have soaked two igniters side by side, and a cooling fan that stopped can let an induction board overheat. Each repair has its own price, and you approve each one. ### Why are there no prices on the cooktop repair pages? Because one job can be quick on a coil top that lifts on a hinge and slow on a heavy rangetop fastened into a stone counter with the valve reachable only from a cramped cabinet. That is why the cost page sorts cooktop jobs into bands and leaves your own figure to the diagnosis. ### Will the right part be on the van the first time? Igniters, burner caps, spark modules, coil elements and knob switches usually are, and a model number given at booking raises the odds.
