What Pasadena does
to a cooktop.
Pasadena's Ordinance 7398, in effect from August 11, 2022, required newly built multifamily buildings of more than three units, mixed-use buildings and commercial buildings to be all-electric.
The ordinance left single-family houses and accessory dwelling units free to keep gas, and it exempted existing buildings undergoing alterations.
On August 20, 2025, the city suspended enforcement of the ordinance.
NOAA's Pasadena station reaches 80 degrees on about 181 days in a normal year and 100 degrees on about 9 or 10.
All of Los AngelesOlder housing stock
Gas to an old kitchen may still run through black iron laid long ago, ending at a shutoff deep in a base cabinet, and the connector between that valve and the cooktop is inspected whenever the top is lifted.
Mixed housing
Kitchens on a mixed block may run on gas piping or a panel from another era, so moving an older house from a gas cooktop to induction often means a new 240-volt circuit, worth knowing before the old top is written off.
Family houses
Weeknight cooking in these houses leans on the largest burner or the bridge zone for big pans, so those see the most heat and are tested first when a family reports a slow boil.
