What the cooktop radiant element repair
involves.

Radiant cooktop element repair is about what lives under the glass. Each zone is a coiled ribbon or a halogen lamp pressed into an insulated dish, with a thin rod limiter across it that cuts power if the glass gets too hot. Dual and triple zones add a second ring and a switch that brings it in. An element burns open at one point and the zone stays dark on every setting; a limiter drifts and switches the element off early; a worn contact in the switch, or a relay on the board, leaves only part of a zone working. The cooktop has to come out of the counter for an element to be changed, so the technician tests from above first and then replaces only the part that measured bad.

How the visit goes

Radiant element repair,
step by step.

Set the cooktop back in its seal, restore power, and watch every zone reach and hold its setting.

01

Switch on each zone and its outer rings, and time how quickly each glows and whether it holds heat.

02

Turn off the breaker, confirm the circuit is dead at the junction box, and lift the glass cooktop out.

03

Measure the element, its limiter and the switch or relay that feeds it, and look for scorched terminals.

04

Fit the new element or limiter in its dish, tighten fresh terminals and route the leads away from hot surfaces.

05

Set the cooktop back in its seal, restore power, and watch every zone reach and hold its setting.

Cooktop Element Not Heating

6 causes, cheapest first

Before you call

Tell us this when you book

  1. Which zone, and whether the inner or the outer ring is affected
  2. Whether it stays dark, or glows and then fades
  3. Whether the cooktop uses knobs or touch controls
  4. Whether anything was dropped on the glass, or a burning smell came first

It also answers

Low to moderate,
on the site's scale.

The element itself is a modest part. The time goes into lifting a glass cooktop out of the counter and resealing it, and a dual or triple element sits a little above a single ring.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Most Tampa Bay glass cooktops heat with radiant ribbons under the glass, and a zone that stays dark or glows in only part of its ring is usually a burned element or its limiter, replaced from the underside once the top is lifted.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Orlando vacation rentals see radiant zones run on high for hours by unfamiliar cooks, and dual or bridge elements there tend to lose one ring first, a repair made by replacing that element under the glass.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

South Florida condo cooktops are largely radiant glass, and the element repair happens inside the counter cutout, with the top tipped up from above rather than carried out through the tower.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

Radiant glass cooktops in New York's newer all-electric buildings sit over drawers or a compact oven, and a dead zone is traced to its element, switch or control while working in a cabinet space measured in inches.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

In Houston homes that cook on electricity, a radiant zone that heats slowly after a surge or brownout often has a damaged limiter or switch rather than a burned ribbon, and testing separates the two before a part is ordered.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Chicagoland high-rises are where radiant cooktops concentrate, and a zone that will not heat there often traces to a loose or scorched terminal on the element, repaired along with the element itself if the ribbon is damaged.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Los Angeles homes that chose a radiant cooktop for an unbroken glass counter often have warming zones and bridge elements, each with its own element and control, and the repair tests every one separately.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

San Diego radiant cooktops in inland builder homes tend to wear out their busiest front zone first, and the repair replaces that single element rather than the whole top when the glass is sound.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

In the Bay Area a radiant glass cooktop is often the step before induction, and a failed element there is usually worth replacing while the glass is intact and the other zones still heat.

Questions about
the cooktop radiant element repair.

Can a radiant element be changed without a new glass top?
Yes, on nearly every model. The element is a separate dish clipped under the glass, and either the glass lifts off the frame or the whole cooktop is turned over. Only a cracked or badly stained glass calls for a new top.
Why does my radiant zone glow and then turn off by itself?
It cycles on purpose at lower settings to hold a level of heat. On high it should stay on. If it keeps dropping out at full heat, the limiter under the glass may be tripping early, often because a warped pan is trapping heat.
The outer ring of my large zone does not come on. Is that the element?
It can be the outer ring of the element, but the switch that adds the second ring is just as likely. Both are tested before either is ordered.
How long does a radiant element last?
Many last the life of the cooktop. Heavy use at high heat, pans that do not sit flat, and spills that reach the terminals through a gap at the edge wear them out sooner.
