What the cooktop spark module and gas valve repair
involves.
Cooktop gas valve repair covers the gas path and the ignition controls that sit below the top surface. Each knob turns a valve on a common manifold, and on the same stem a small switch tells the spark module to fire. The module, a small box on the underside, sends a high-voltage pulse to every electrode at once. A module that weakens gives a faint spark; a switch soaked by a spill keeps the whole top ticking; a valve worn at its seat holds no low flame, sticks, or will not close fully. The regulator where the gas line enters sets the pressure, and on a converted unit it must match the gas. All valve and regulator work starts with the gas closed below the counter and ends with every joint leak-tested.
How the visit goesWhat it usually costsLow to moderate · Spark module, gas valve or regulator
A spark switch or module sits toward the lower end. A valve or a regulator comes out higher, because the cooktop is raised from its cutout and every joint that was opened is leak-tested before it goes back.

Spark module and gas valve repair,
step by step.
Reopen the gas, test every opened joint for leaks, and set each low flame so it holds steady before the top goes back.
Confirm the complaint knob by knob and watch whether the spark, the flame or the setting is the problem.
Close the gas shutoff in the cabinet below and unplug the cooktop or switch off its power.
Lift the cooktop out of the counter, or take off a rangetop's front panel, and test the module, the switches and the valve stems.
Replace the module, switch, valve or regulator that failed, with the orifice and setting that match your gas.
Reopen the gas, test every opened joint for leaks, and set each low flame so it holds steady before the top goes back.

The kitchen, the climate and the building all change how the cooktop spark module and gas valve repair goes. These notes are about that, metro by metro.
All service areasTampa BayFL · 31 areas
The spark module on a Tampa Bay gas cooktop sits under the burner box and can be hit by a summer surge, so when every burner clicks at once or none will spark, the module and its switch harness are tested before the igniters.
OrlandoFL · 30 areas
In Orlando's gas-piped subdivisions the same builder cooktop repeats from house to house, and a spark module that clicks all burners nonstop after a spill is a repeat repair, done with the gas closed and the cooktop unplugged under the counter.
Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas
South Florida humidity and salt reach the spark switches on a gas cooktop's valve stems, which then keep clicking long after the burner has lit, and the repair replaces the switch or the valve it rides on.
New York MetroNY · 75 areas
In New York apartments a cooktop gas valve that turns stiffly or will not hold a low flame is replaced only with the supply closed at the cooktop's shutoff, and every joint is leak-tested before the burners are lit again.
HoustonTX · 36 areas
After a Houston outage, the jolt as the grid comes back can knock out a gas cooktop's spark module, so a top whose burners all stopped sparking after an outage usually needs the module rather than a set of new igniters.
ChicagoIL · 50 areas
Chicagoland gas cooktops that have served for decades may have valves that turn hard or drift, and the repair replaces the valve and checks the manifold joints under the burner box, finishing with a leak test before cooking resumes.
Los AngelesCA · 95 areas
Los Angeles rangetops with automatic reignition depend on the spark module sensing each flame, so a burner that keeps sparking once lit, or relights itself when a door lets in a draft, points the repair at the module and its sensing.
San DiegoCA · 31 areas
In coastal San Diego homes the spark module's terminals and the leads to each electrode corrode, and weak or missed sparks there are fixed by replacing the module or the leads rather than every igniter on the cooktop.
San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas
European gas cooktops and pro rangetops in Bay Area remodels use flame-failure valves with a thermocouple at each burner, so a burner that dies when the knob is released needs its thermocouple or valve replaced, with the gas shut off first.
