Is yours
a rangetop?
A rangetop is the upper half of a professional-style cooking appliance, built to sit on a base cabinet with its control knobs facing the room along a thick front panel. It carries four to eight heavy burners, often sealed dual-stack burners that run two flames for high output and a very low simmer, and many models add a griddle or a char-broiler with its own burner and thermostat. The gas connection and the power cord for the spark and re-ignition system come up from the cabinet below, and the rangetop usually stands slightly proud of the counter so its front panel lines up with the cabinet doors. The weight, the high-output burners and the automatic re-ignition make rangetop repair a different job from a light drop-in gas cooktop.
What fails on a rangetop
How to tell
The knobs are on an upright front panel, not on the cooking surface, and the unit sits in a notch in the counter with a base cabinet underneath.
Continuous cast-iron grates run the full width, with a griddle plate or a char-broiler on some models.
A burner relights on its own with a click if the flame blows out, a feature most drop-in cooktops do not have.
The unit is heavy and deep, and the rating plate is usually found behind a knob or under the drip tray.
What fails
on this design.
On a rangetop: re-ignition and spark parts, dual-stack burners on low, griddle and char-broiler parts, valves and the manifold.
The problems it showsRe-ignition and spark parts
The system watches each flame through its electrode and sparks again when the flame goes out. A dirty electrode or a weak module makes a burner click on and off while it is plainly lit.
Dual-stack burners on low
The small simmer flame sits under the main ring. Grease in its ports, or a valve whose low setting has drifted, lets it go out on the lowest setting or burn too hot to hold a gentle simmer.
Griddle and char-broiler parts
Their thermostats, burners and electrodes see grease and high heat every day. The griddle heats unevenly or will not light, while the burners beside it work.
Valves and the manifold
Heavy use wears the valve stems and the knob seats. A knob turns stiff, the flame stops tracking the setting, and a stem that seeps is a gas leak handled with the supply shut off.
Getting at it,
and whether to.
Grates, burner caps and the drip trays come off from the top, and the electrodes are cleaned and inspected where they stand.
What repairs costOn the visit
- The front panel comes off after the knobs are pulled, which exposes the valves, the spark switches and the manifold without moving the rangetop.
- A module, a griddle thermostat or the regulator may mean sliding the rangetop forward off its cabinet, which takes two people and protection for the counter and floor.
- The gas is closed at the valve inside the base cabinet before any fitting is loosened, and every opened joint is leak-tested once the burners are lit again.
Repair or replace
A rangetop is built to be repaired. Burners, valves, electrodes and griddle parts stay available for years, the steel body rarely wears out, and a new rangetop of the same width is a large purchase that may also need a new cabinet notch or a different gas connection. Replacement makes sense mostly after heavy corrosion or fire damage, or when a discontinued model's valves can no longer be found.
