Smell gas? Get everyone out first. No gas: switch the breaker off

This is urgent, because heat that cannot be stopped can set fire to a pan or anything left beside it. On an electric or induction cooktop, switch the breaker off and clear the counter; for a gas burner that stays lit, keep back and phone the gas utility or 911. The cooktop stays off until the stuck part has been replaced.

What it
usually means.

Heat that ignores the control is the one cooktop failure that can start a fire with nobody standing near it. On a coil or radiant top, the infinite switch behind the knob has contacts that can weld together, so the element stays at full power wherever the knob points. On touch-control and induction cooktops, a relay or the power stage on a board can latch on. On gas, the knob valve may not close all the way, or a knob that slipped on its stem reads off while the valve is still open. Glass that simply stays hot for a while after cooking is ordinary residual heat; heat that climbs, or a flame that keeps burning, is not.

Answer these first

01

Is it a gas flame, a coil, a radiant ring under glass, or an induction zone?

02

Does the knob reach its off stop and feel like the others, or does it spin loosely?

03

On a touch model, does the display show the zone as off while it keeps heating?

04

Is the element getting hotter, or only staying warm as it cools?

05

Did it begin after a spill ran over the controls or into the knob openings?

Burner or element won't turn off: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

For an electric or induction cooktop, switch off its breaker at the panel and confirm that the heat stops.

02

If a gas burner stays lit with its knob at off, keep back from it and phone the gas utility's emergency number or 911; do not reach into the cabinet below.

03

Move pans, towels, paper and utensils well away from the cooktop.

Also worth checking

  • Keep the breaker off; restoring power to use the other burners puts the stuck part back in the circuit.
  • When you book, say which burner or zone it was and whether its knob or key felt normal.

6 things cooktop burner or element won't turn off turns out to be, from residual heat on glass taken for a live element to induction power stage latched on.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

Residual heat on glass taken for a live element

Radiant glass stays hot for many minutes after use, and the hot-surface light remains lit while it does. If the heat falls steadily, nothing is stuck.

  2. 02 low to moderate

    Infinite switch contacts welded shut

Years of switching an element's full current can fuse the contacts inside the switch. The element then runs flat out regardless of the knob, and the switch is replaced.

  3. 03 low

    Knob stripped on its stem

A cracked knob can turn without moving the switch or valve behind it, so its pointer says off while the burner or element carries on.

  4. 04 moderate

Gas valve not seating at off

The valve behind each gas knob should close completely at its off stop. Grease or wear can hold it slightly open, leaving a small flame alight.

  5. 05 moderate

Relay on the touch board stuck closed

Touch cooktops power each zone through a relay. One that sticks keeps current on the element after the display has already gone dark.

  6. 06 moderate to highest

    Induction power stage latched on

A shorted switching part on the induction power board can keep one zone energized. It is usually followed soon by an error code or a tripped breaker.

Questions about
cooktop burner or element won't turn off.

Can I just unplug the cooktop?
Most electric and induction cooktops are wired straight to a box in the cabinet, not plugged into an outlet, so the breaker is how power is cut. Use the breaker labeled for the cooktop, or the main if you cannot find it.
Should I close the gas valve under the cooktop myself?
Not while a burner is still lit above it, because that means reaching into a cabinet beneath an open flame. Call the gas utility or 911 and let them shut off the supply.
Why does my glass top stay hot so long after switching off?
Glass-ceramic holds heat for a long time, and the hot-surface light stays on as a warning. That is normal as long as the heat keeps falling.
Will the other elements work once the stuck one is fixed?
Usually. The repair targets the one switch, relay or valve that stuck, and the technician tests the rest while the top is open.
