What the form asks,
and why.
Everything you type goes to the technician before the visit, which improves the odds that the right igniter, element or switch is already on board. Sending it commits you to nothing; the cooktop is priced only once it has been diagnosed.
Have the model number to hand if you can find it: where the data plate is covers the usual places.
Rather talk? (844) 252-4077Step oneWhich cooktop, and what it did
Gas, electric, induction or a pro-style rangetop, the make, its width, and which burner or zone is misbehaving. That decides who comes and which parts are loaded.
Step twoThe date and arrival window
Pick a day and a window that suit you, so nobody has to lose a whole day waiting in the kitchen.
Step threeReaching the cooktop
Where the cooktop is and how to reach you on the day. Mention whether the top burns natural gas or propane or runs on electricity, whether the cabinet under it holds drawers or a built-in oven, and any gate code or parking note.
After you book,
the visit.
The three steps above are the booking. These four are what happens once a technician is in your kitchen.
What repairs costEach burner and zone, tried in turn
The technician lights or switches on every burner and zone one after another, watches the flame, the glow or the pan response, and reads the display before naming the failed part.
The price, before any part is fitted
You hear which repair the cooktop needs and what it costs before anything is touched. If a new top that fits the same cutout makes more sense, you hear that as well.
The usual parts in the van
Igniters, burner caps, spark modules, coil elements and infinite switches ride along. A glass top, an induction board or a part built for one model is ordered by number, so giving that number when you book can spare a second trip.
Repaired, then cooked on
Once the part is in, every burner is relit and each zone is brought to heat under a pan while the technician watches the flame, the glow and the controls, instead of assuming the repair took.
Before the
technician arrives.
Three things that make the first visit the only one.
What a code meansLeave the burners alone
Turning a burner through its click again and again, or cycling a zone that keeps cutting out, wears the igniter and can overwrite a stored code. With a gas smell, a burning smell, broken glass or a tripped breaker, keep the cooktop off altogether.
Write down any code
If a zone display shows a code, copy each character in order. The same code often means something different on another make.
Clear the top and the cabinet below
Take pans and the grates off once they are cool, and empty the cabinet or drawers under the cooktop so the gas valve or the wiring box can be reached. Note when the trouble began and what came just before: a boil-over, a power cut, a dropped pot, a new countertop.
