Is yours
an induction?
An induction cooktop looks like a glass radiant model, but nothing under the glass gets red hot. Each zone is a flat copper coil, and a power board sends high-frequency current through it so that an iron-based pan above heats directly; the glass warms only from the pan. Because the boards shed heat, a fan draws air through vents on the underside or the front lip of the unit, and the cabinet or drawer below must leave room for that air to move. Induction cooktops are wired to a 240-volt circuit in the base cabinet like any electric model, but the parts that wear out are electronic: power boards, the coils and their temperature sensors, the touch control and the fan.
What fails on an induction cooktop
How to tell
A pan placed on a zone heats within seconds, and the glass next to it stays cool enough to touch.
A magnet sticks to the pans that work on it; aluminum or copper pans without an iron base make the display blink.
A soft hum or light clicking comes from under the glass at high settings, and a fan keeps running after the zones switch off.
The controls are a touch strip or a slider on the glass, and two zones may join into a larger bridge area.

What fails
on this design.
On an induction cooktop: power boards, the cooling fan and its airflow, coils and their sensors, the touch control.
The problems it showsPower boards
They switch large currents very quickly and get hot doing it. A board that fails leaves one or two zones dead, trips the breaker at start-up or shows a code.
The cooling fan and its airflow
A fan clogged by dust, or starved of air by a closed drawer, lets the boards overheat. Zones lose power mid-boil, then shut off with a temperature code.
Coils and their sensors
Less common than a board. A coil with a damaged winding or a loose sensor under it stops detecting the pan or cuts out at high power.
The touch control
Spills and cleaner on the keys, or a failing control board, stop the panel from responding or make it start a zone on its own.
Getting at it,
and whether to.
All of the electronics are underneath, so the cooktop is lifted out of the counter and turned over on a padded table.
What repairs costOn the visit
- The breaker is switched off before any cover comes open, and the boards are left to discharge before they are handled.
- When the induction cooktop sits over a drawer, the vent space below it is checked, because a blocked intake is a cause the parts alone will not show.
- Replacement boards are often tied to a production run, so the model and serial numbers from the rating plate are needed before ordering.
Repair or replace
An induction repair is worth weighing with care. A fan, a sensor or a touch control is a reasonable job, and a single power board on a recent model usually is too. The balance tips toward a new unit when two boards and a coil fail together, the glass is also cracked, or the maker no longer supplies the board for that model.
