What the cooktop glass top replacement
involves.

Cooktop glass replacement swaps the sheet of glass ceramic that forms the whole top of a smooth-surface model. The glass is fired to cope with heat, not with a dropped jar or a pan corner, and a crack lets moisture reach the elements or coils and the wiring underneath. Some glass tops are sold with a new frame and seal, others as a bare panel that the technician bonds to the old frame; on induction models the touch keys and their sensors are printed on or bonded under the glass and move to the new panel. The model number decides which is available and how long it takes to arrive, which is why a picture of the rating plate at booking matters more for this repair than for most.

How the visit goes

Glass top replacement,
step by step.

Power up every zone, confirm the controls read each touch, and show you what to keep off the new glass.

01

Look at the crack or chip, check whether any element, coil or key underneath has been damaged, and switch off the breaker.

02

Lift the cooktop out of the counter and lay it face down on a padded surface.

03

Move the elements or coils, the sensors and the control keys onto the new glass and frame.

04

Seat the new glass with a fresh seal so no spill can reach the parts below, and set the cooktop back in its cutout.

05

Power up every zone, confirm the controls read each touch, and show you what to keep off the new glass.

  1. Where the crack or chip is, and whether it has spread
  2. A photo of the rating plate under the unit, if you can reach it
  3. Whether the cooktop is radiant, induction or gas on glass
  4. Whether any zone or key stopped working when it cracked

It also answers

Moderate to highest,
on the site's scale.

The panel is large and made for one model, and moving the elements, coils and keys across to it takes time. On a premium induction cooktop this is among the costliest jobs the site lists.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Once a Tampa Bay cooktop's glass shows a crack, the top is switched off at the breaker and left unused until the new glass is fitted, which on most models arrives as a glass-and-frame assembly that drops into the existing cutout.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Orlando rental kitchens see cooktop glass cracked by dropped pans and cast iron dragged across it, and the replacement fits a new glass or glass-and-frame unit into the same opening between guest stays.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

In South Florida towers a replacement glass top rides up in the service elevator and is set into the stone cutout, with the old sealant cleaned away so the new glass sits flat and sealed.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

New York buildings route a replacement cooktop glass through the lobby and elevator by appointment, and the swap is done in place, with the cooktop off at the panel from the moment the crack was found.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston glass tops crack from impact or from a cold spill on a hot zone, and until the new glass arrives the breaker stays off, since a crack can let liquid reach the elements and wiring below.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

In Chicagoland the replacement glass for a condo cooktop is ordered by exact model, since many carry the touch controls under the same panel, and the counter seal is renewed when the new glass goes in.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Los Angeles cooktops set flush into stone need their replacement glass fitted at the same height and seal, so the new top lies level with the counter instead of standing proud of it.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

When a San Diego cooktop glass cracks, the cooktop is turned off at the breaker and not used, and the replacement is ordered by model so the glass, its frame and the gasket all match the cutout.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Induction and radiant tops in the Bay Area follow the same rule when the glass cracks: breaker off and no cooking, then new glass fitted by model, with the coils and sensors beneath checked while the top is open.

Questions about
the cooktop glass top replacement.

Can I keep using a cooktop with a small crack in the glass?
No. Even a hairline crack can open under heat, and a spill through it reaches live parts. Switch the cooktop off at the breaker and leave it unused until the glass is replaced.
Can a chip at the edge be filled instead of replacing the glass?
A resin fill may hide a chip, but it does not restore the strength of the glass. A chip on an edge where a pan rests, or where heat reaches it, is treated like a crack.
Why does a new glass top sit so much higher on the scale than an element?
The glass-ceramic panel is a large, model-specific part, often sold only with its frame, and moving the parts under it onto the new panel takes an hour or more. The cost page on this site shows where that lands against other cooktop work.
How do I keep a new glass top from cracking?
Keep jars, cast iron and anything heavy from dropping onto it, lift pans rather than sliding them, and never leave an empty pan on a hot zone. Store nothing on the glass, since a zone started by accident heats whatever sits there.
