What the cooktop burner and igniter repair
involves.

Gas cooktop burner repair deals with the parts you can see once the grate is off: the cap, the burner head and its ports, the ceramic electrode beside it and the wire that runs down through the top. Most burners that refuse to light have nothing wrong with the gas at all. The cap sits a few degrees off, a port ring is packed with baked grease, or the electrode is wet or cracked and sends its spark into the burner base instead of across the gas. The repair begins with cleaning, drying and seating, then tests the electrode and its lead, and replaces only the head, cap or electrode that has actually failed. The spark module and the valves have a page of their own, because they sit deeper in the cooktop.

How the visit goes

Burner and igniter repair,
step by step.

Relight every burner from simmer to high, and hand back a top where each flame is even, blue and quiet.

01

Light each burner in turn and note how long it takes to catch, where the spark lands and how the flame settles.

02

Take off the grate, cap and head, clear the ports with a fine wire, and dry the electrode and the well it sits in.

03

Check the electrode for cracks, carbon tracks and a worn tip, and measure its lead back to the module.

04

Fit a new electrode, burner head or cap where one has failed, seated square on its base.

05

Relight every burner from simmer to high, and hand back a top where each flame is even, blue and quiet.

Cooktop Burner Won't Light

6 causes, cheapest first

Before you call

Tell us this when you book

  1. Whether the burner clicks with no flame, lights slowly or lights and then goes out
  2. Which burner, or whether all of them act up
  3. Whether a pot boiled over or the top was cleaned with spray recently
  4. What the flame looks like when it does light

It also answers

Low,
on the site's scale.

Cleaning and reseating a burner needs no parts at all. An electrode, a burner head or a cap is a small part fitted from above, with no need to lift the cooktop out of the counter.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Tampa Bay gas cooktops, on a utility main or a propane tank, sit through months of humid air that leaves moisture under the burner caps, and an igniter that sparks without lighting is often cured by drying and seating the cap, or by a new electrode.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Orlando rental kitchens put gas cooktops in front of guests who move grates and caps around, so burner repair there often starts with a cap on the wrong burner or knocked off its base before any igniter is replaced.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

In South Florida a gas cooktop is almost always a house appliance, not a tower one, and near the bay the burner work includes scraping salt crust from burner heads and electrode tips so the flame catches evenly all the way around.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

New York gas cooktops cook daily in small kitchens, and boil-overs that run down through the burner heads onto the igniters most often keep a burner from lighting, a repair made from above once the gas valve under the counter is closed.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

On a Houston built-in gas cooktop a burner that lights but burns lazily or lifts off its ports usually needs its ports cleared or its cap reseated, and in homes on propane the technician confirms the burner orifices match that gas.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Chicagoland gas cooktops work hardest through the winter holidays, and a cracked igniter or a burner head warped by a pot boiled dry on high is what the technician most often replaces before the big cooking days.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Los Angeles rangetops run sealed high-output burners and often a dedicated simmer burner, and when one goes dark the repair uses the maker's own igniter and burner parts rather than a generic fit.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

Beach-side San Diego homes see salt on the ceramic igniters of their gas cooktops, and a burner that needs several tries to catch there usually gets a new igniter along with a cleaned burner base.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area houses that still cook on a gas cooktop are mostly older ones, and burner repair there keeps a well-made top in service, often with new igniters and caps, for owners not yet ready to switch to induction.

Questions about
the cooktop burner and igniter repair.

The burner lit fine yesterday and today it only clicks. What changed?
Most often a boil-over or a wet sponge reached the electrode or the burner base. Leave the burner off to dry for a few hours, or lift the cap and blot the well. If it still only clicks once dry, the electrode may be cracked or its lead damaged.
Can I light a cooktop burner with a match while I wait for the repair?
On most gas cooktops, yes: hold a long lighter at the ports first, then turn the knob. Never turn the gas on and then hunt for a flame. A rangetop with automatic re-ignition may keep clicking while lit this way, which is harmless but a sign it still needs attention.
My enameled burner caps are chipped. Does that matter?
A chip on top is cosmetic. A cap that is warped, or one from a different burner size, sits unevenly and gives a lopsided flame, so caps are only swapped for the right part for that position.
How should I clean burner ports without damaging them?
Use a straight pin or a fine wire pushed straight in, and warm soapy water for the head. Avoid toothpicks, which snap off inside, and never soak an electrode. Dry every part completely before it goes back.
