Why the number matters before any repair
Cooktops that look identical from above can differ underneath: one generation of a 30-inch gas top may use a different spark module, burner head or glass than the next, even under the same brand and trim. The model number is how a technician orders the right part the first time, and how you find the correct owner's manual, lock sequence, error list and cutout size.
The serial number matters too. It records when and where the unit was built, which settles questions of age and recall eligibility. Both usually sit on the same plate, so once you find one you have found the other.
Telling the two apart
The plate labels them, but worn or greasy plates can be hard to read. The model number is the product code shared by every unit of that design, often with letters showing size, fuel and finish. The serial number is unique to your unit and is often mostly digits. Note any short string after a dash or slash in the model, since it frequently marks a production revision that changes parts.
Reading the plate from the cabinet below
For most drop-in cooktops, the cooktop model number location is the bottom of the chassis. Whirlpool puts its rating plate on the underside of the cooktop, and Wolf gives the bottom of the cooktop for its standard models. That means working from the base cabinet: open the doors or pull out the drawers, which on many drawer bases lift off their runners, and look up.
A phone camera helps more than your neck. Hold it flat, facing up, with the flash on, and take several pictures across the underside; zoom in afterward. The plate is a foil or printed sticker, often silver or white, sometimes with a barcode or QR code.
- Clear the drawers or shelves beneath the cooktop and switch off any cabinet light that dazzles the lens.
- Photograph the whole underside, then close in on any sticker you find.
- Keep hands off the junction box, the gas connector and the cooling vents while reaching.
- Check the photo for both the model and serial lines before closing up.
When an oven is built in below
If the cooktop is installed over a built-in oven, the underside is sealed off from view. Then the copies on the top side, below, and the paperwork become the realistic options. Never remove the oven to reach a cooktop label; the plate is not worth the lifting.

Places to look from above, by cooktop type
Several makers put a second label, or the only one, where you can reach it from the counter. GE's list for its cooktops is a good map of where to look on any brand, because makers reuse the same few spots. Check these with the cooktop off and cool, and on electric and induction models with the breaker off before lifting anything.
Gas cooktops
Lift the grates and look around the burner box edges and under the front or rear control knobs; GE names the rear control knob and the right front knob on some of its models. A knob pulls straight off its shaft, and the label, if present, sits on the panel behind it.
Coil, radiant and induction cooktops
On coil tops, GE places some labels under the rear left or front right surface unit, reached by lifting the coil and its drip bowl. On glass tops the plate is almost always underneath, though one older GE induction manual also mentions a copy under the air vent grille at the right side. Never lift a glass top to look.
Pro rangetops and downdraft vents
Wolf's sealed-burner rangetops carry the plate on the bottom of the control panel at the far right, which you can read by crouching in front of the rangetop with a flashlight. Its older rangetops hide the tag under the left surface burner pan, on the left side wall of the burner box. A separate downdraft vent has its own plate; Wolf places it next to the blower housing below the countertop.

When the plate is missing or unreadable
Plates fade from heat, and some are torn off during installation. Before any disassembly, look for the paperwork: the installation instructions, which often have a box where the installer wrote the model and serial, the owner's manual, a registration card, the purchase receipt, or the remodel file. That older GE manual asks the installer to copy both numbers there for exactly this reason.
If nothing turns up, a technician can often identify a cooktop from its burner layout, glass pattern and control style, then confirm it from part labels inside during the visit. Tell us the width, the fuel and the layout when booking, and add clear photos of the top and the underside.
- Installation instructions or owner's manual, often kept in a kitchen drawer.
- The appliance store's receipt or delivery ticket.
- The contractor's or builder's appliance schedule from a remodel.
- Photos of the cooktop taken when it was new, which sometimes caught the carton label.
