Troubleshooting

Cooktop checks worth making before you book a technician

Five cooktop troubleshooting checks settle many problems before a visit: the breaker and the outlet or junction box in the base cabinet, the gas shutoff on a gas model, the lock or a power-cut reset on the controls, caps and pans on top, and one timed boil on the zone in question. A gas smell ends the checks at once.

At a
glance.

A cooktop hides most of its workings in two places you rarely look: the house panel and the base cabinet under the counter. Twenty minutes spent there, and on the surface itself, settles a surprising share of calls before anyone has to come out.

Where the supply livesThe cabinet under the cooktop

A gas model plugs into a 120-volt outlet there; electric and induction tops usually run to a junction box.

Reset that clears glitchesBreaker off for one minute

Whirlpool's cooktop pages use this power reset before anything else.

Most overlookedA lock left on after a power cut

Some cooktops come back from an outage locked, and some gas models will not light during one.

Check one: power at the panel and under the counter

These cooktop troubleshooting checks start with electricity, because every cooktop needs it, gas ones included, and the supply is easy to lose track of when it is hidden. A gas cooktop typically plugs into an ordinary 120-volt grounded outlet inside the base cabinet, and Whirlpool's cooktop pages ask for that outlet to be on a dedicated circuit. Electric and induction tops need a 240-volt circuit, usually through a short armored cable into a junction box on the cabinet wall, sometimes through a heavy cord and receptacle.

Find the breaker labeled for the cooktop. A tripped breaker sits between on and off, or shows a colored flag; push it fully off, then back on. If the cooktop still shows nothing, Whirlpool's reset for its glass-top models is a minute with the breaker off, then power restored and a further minute of watching for any error to come back.

A breaker that trips again

One reset is a check; repeated resets are not. A cooktop breaker that trips a second time, especially the moment a certain zone is switched on, points to a short in an element, a coil, a board or the wiring. Leave it off and book, and mention which zone or knob sets it off.

Looking in the cabinet without opening anything

Empty the drawers or shelves below the cooktop and use a flashlight. You are looking for a plug pulled half out by a drawer, a cord pinched by a drawer runner, scorch marks at a receptacle, or a junction box cover that has come loose. Report what you see; never remove a cover or touch the conductors inside it.

Check two: the gas shutoff on a gas cooktop or rangetop

The manual shutoff for a drop-in gas cooktop is usually in the same base cabinet, where a rigid pipe meets a flexible connector; for a pro rangetop on its own base cabinet it may be behind a removable lower panel. Whirlpool's first gas question is simply whether the valve is on: a lever handle running parallel to the pipe is open, and one across it is closed.

Valves get bumped closed when the cabinet is packed full, when a plumber has worked under the sink next door, or after a remodel. Opening a closed valve is the whole of the owner's part. If a newly installed cooktop still will not light, Whirlpool explains that a fresh line may still hold air, which one burner run for a moment will push out.

Check three: locks, power cuts and control settings

Many touch-control cooktops, and some gas models with electronic controls, have a lock that keeps every zone from starting. It is usually a key marked with a padlock or the word lock, which you hold down for roughly three seconds. One older GE induction cooktop, per its manual, powers back up locked whenever power is restored after an outage, and Whirlpool notes that a gas cooktop with a lockout will not light its burners during a power failure.

  • A lock light or padlock symbol lit on the glass.
  • A demo or showroom mode left on by the installer, which lights the display but heats nothing; the manual gives the exit sequence.
  • A zone set but not confirmed: many touch tops cancel a selection if no power level follows within a few seconds.
  • Water, a damp cloth or a pan handle lying across the touch keys.

Check four: what is on top of the cooktop

With a gas model, raise every grate and inspect the caps underneath. A cap sitting askew, a head that is wet after cleaning, or ports crusted with food will stop a burner lighting or make the flame ragged, and each has its own fix in our guide to a burner that clicks without lighting. On a rangetop with a griddle or grill, check that the drip tray is in place and the griddle burner's knob is the one you think it is.

On glass, look along the surface in raking light for a crack or a chip, and set a pan you trust on the zone that seems weak. For induction that means a pan a magnet grips across its base; for radiant, a heavy flat-bottomed pan that does not rock.

If the glass is cracked

Stop the checks there. A crack can let spills reach live parts underneath, so cut its circuit at the panel and keep it dead until new glass is fitted.

Check five: one timed test, and notes for the technician

Heat a quart of water in a flat pan on the suspect zone or burner at full power and note how many minutes it takes to boil. Do the same on a zone of similar size that works. A big difference, a zone that never boils, or a flame that shrinks partway through gives a technician a concrete starting point instead of a description of a feeling.

Before booking, gather what makes the visit shorter:

  • The model and serial numbers, from the plate under the cooktop or on the paperwork.
  • Which burner or zone, what it does, and whether it happens cold or only after some minutes.
  • Anything shown on the display, written exactly as it appears.
  • Roughly how old the cooktop is, and whether it sits over a wall oven or drawers.

Step
by step.

Five steps, in the order worth doing them.

01

Power

Reset the cooktop breaker, and look under the counter for a loose plug or damaged cord.

02

Gas

On a gas model, confirm the shutoff handle lies in line with the pipe.

03

Controls

Release any lock, dry the keys and clear demo mode if the display lights but nothing heats.

04

Surface

Seat the caps, dry the heads, and test with a pan you trust.

05

Test and note

Time one boil, write down what you saw, and find the model number.

Questions
owners ask.

The cooktop display is dark but the kitchen lights work. Where is the problem?
Start with the cooktop's own breaker, which is separate from the lighting circuits. If it is on and the display is still dark, check the lock and then the plug or cord in the cabinet below.
Do I have to remove the cooktop from its opening for any of these checks?
No. Every check here is done from above or from the open cabinet. Removing one from its opening involves the gas line or the hard-wired circuit, and that is an installer's or technician's task.
Is a diagnostic visit still worth booking if these checks find nothing?
Yes, and the notes you made shorten it. Knowing the supply, gas and controls are fine lets the technician go straight to the burner, board or element.
