What it
usually means.

A cooktop error code names the self-test the control could not pass. On a cooktop those tests cover the cooking surface and nothing else: radiant element temperature and limiters, the induction power board, coils and pan sensing, the cooling fan, the touch keys, ignition on electronically controlled gas models, and the link between boards. Not every code is a failure: a control lock, a showroom mode and a pan symbol are prompts. Codes are not shared across makers, and one maker may reuse a code with another meaning on another model line, so read any code together with the model number.

Answer these first

01

Which characters are on the display, and could any letter really be a digit, like a B for an 8?

02

Does the code come back after power has been cut at the breaker for five minutes?

03

Does it name one zone, or does it stop the whole cooktop?

04

When does it appear: at power-up, when a pan goes on, or after cooking for a while?

05

Can you find the model label? On a cooktop it is often under the burner box, reached from the cabinet below, or on a card tucked into that cabinet.

Cooktop error code: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Copy the code down character for character, or take a photo of the display.

02

If the code comes with heat that will not stop, a burning smell or smoke, switch off the breaker; with any gas odor, leave and call the gas utility from outside.

03

Find the model and serial label, often under the burner box or on a card in the cabinet below.

Also worth checking

  • Cut power at the breaker for five minutes, restore it, and see whether the code returns.
  • Check the code against the manual for your exact model, because some codes are prompts rather than failures.

How soon does it need a visit?

Most cooktop codes can wait for a scheduled visit. Treat it as urgent when the code warns of overheating, arrives with smoke or a scorched smell, or a zone goes on heating; turn off the breaker. Any gas odor means leaving the house and calling the gas utility from outdoors.

6 things cooktop error code turns out to be, from pan, lock or showroom prompt to induction coil or power board code.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

    Pan, lock or showroom prompt

A pan symbol, a lock symbol or a demo indicator can pass for an error code. The manual lists each one and how to clear it.

  2. 02 low to moderate

Zone temperature sensor or limiter code

The control saw a reading from a radiant zone's sensor or limiter that it cannot trust, and it stops that zone until the part is checked.

  3. 03 low to moderate

Cooling fan or electronics overheat code

When the fan stalls or the air path under the counter is blocked, the board reports overheating and cuts zones. Clear the space below before booking.

  4. 04 low to moderate

    Gas ignition or flame-loss code

Electronically controlled gas cooktops and some rangetops report a failed ignition or a lost flame. With any gas odor, leave and call the gas utility from outside.

  5. 05 moderate

Touch key or board communication code

A key held down by water or a pan, or two boards that have stopped talking to each other, each raise a code of their own.

  6. 06 moderate to highest

Induction coil or power board code

Induction cooktops report coil, power stage and pan-sensing problems through codes specific to each model family.

Questions about
cooktop error code.

The code vanished after I reset the breaker. Do I still need a visit?
Perhaps not. A power blip can leave behind a code that a reset clears. If it returns at the same point in cooking, the part it points to is failing.
Why do the code lists online not match my cooktop?
Lists online often mix brands, model families or entirely different appliances. Only the manual for your model number can be relied on.
Do induction cooktops show more codes than radiant ones?
Usually, because they carry more electronics: the power boards, the coils, pan sensing and the cooling fan all report through the display.
Can a gas cooktop show error codes?
Some can, mainly models with electronic controls or automatic reignition. Most knob-controlled gas cooktops have no display at all.
