What it
usually means.
Two different fans can live under a cooktop. Induction and many touch models have a cooling fan that moves air across the electronics; it runs during cooking and for several minutes afterward until the board cools. Downdraft cooktops add a blower that pulls smoke down through a vent at the back or center and out through a duct in the floor or an outside wall. A cooling fan that never rests points to a temperature sensor or board that believes it is hot, or to electronics that really are running hot because the air path is blocked. A downdraft that runs on points to its switch, its control, or on pop-up models the limit switch that reports the vent is down.
The 6 causes, cheapest first
Answer these first
Is it the cooling fan under an induction top, or the downdraft blower?
How long does it run after cooking ends?
Is the cabinet below packed, or is a drawer touching the cooktop?
Does the pop-up downdraft vent lower all the way?
Is the fan also noisy, rattling or grinding?
Check these

Cooktop fan runs constantly: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.
Give it fifteen minutes after cooking; many cooling fans stop on their own in that time.
If the fan comes with a burning smell, or the cooktop feels hot underneath, switch off the breaker.
Clear the space under the cooktop and make sure its vent openings are free.
Also worth checking
- On a pop-up downdraft, check that nothing is stopping the vent from lowering fully.
- Say whether it is the cooling fan or the downdraft blower when you book.
How soon does it need a visit?
A fan that runs on is rarely urgent. Clear the air path and book a visit if it continues. A burning smell, heat under the counter or a grinding fan is a reason to switch off the breaker.

6 things cooktop fan runs constantly turns out to be, from normal cool-down run to temperature sensor on the board failed.
The cost guide-
01 no repair
Normal cool-down run
Induction cooling fans keep going for several minutes after the last zone switches off, longest after extended cooking at high power.
-
02 no repair
Blocked air path under the counter
Items stored against the cooktop's underside, or a missing air gap at the front of the cabinet, trap heat and keep the fan running.
-
03 low to moderate
Downdraft switch or control stuck
A stuck key or a relay on the downdraft's control keeps the blower going after it has been switched off.
-
04 low to moderate
Pop-up vent limit switch
Pop-up downdrafts use a switch to sense when the vent is fully lowered. If it is out of line or has failed, the blower runs on or the vent will not go down.
-
05 low to moderate
Fan motor slowing with age
A cooling fan that turns slowly cannot clear the heat, so it runs longer and louder each time.
-
06 moderate
Temperature sensor on the board failed
The cooling fan follows a sensor near the power electronics. A failed sensor reads hot all the time, and the fan never rests.
