What the cooktop cooling fan and downdraft repair
involves.

Cooktop downdraft repair takes in the two blowers a cooktop may carry. The first is the small cooling fan under an induction or touch-control cooktop, which keeps the boards cool and keeps running after the zones switch off until the electronics have cooled. The second is a downdraft vent, either a panel that rises from the counter behind the cooktop or a slot between the burners, with a blower below the counter that pushes the air out through a duct in the floor or the cabinet back. Either fan can clog with grease and dust, seize, or be stopped by a failed sensor or relay, and a rising downdraft panel can jam on its lift motor. The work cleans or replaces the fan, the switch or the motor, and clears the air path around it.

How the visit goes

Cooling fan and downdraft repair,
step by step.

Run the cooktop and the vent together and confirm the fan stops once the surface has cooled.

01

Listen to the fan, or run the downdraft through each speed and its raise-and-lower cycle.

02

Switch off the breaker and reach the fan from beneath the cooktop, or the blower through the cabinet below.

03

Check the fan and motor for grease, dust and seized bearings, and test the sensor, switch or relay that runs them.

04

Clean or replace the fan, the blower motor or the lift motor, and clear the filter and the duct opening.

05

Run the cooktop and the vent together and confirm the fan stops once the surface has cooled.

Before you call

Tell us this when you book

  1. Whether it is a cooling fan under the cooktop or a downdraft vent
  2. Whether the fan runs constantly, never runs or is noisy
  3. Whether a downdraft panel sticks while rising or lowering
  4. Whether a temperature code appears during long cooking

It also answers

Low to moderate,
on the site's scale.

A cooling fan under an induction cooktop sits near the low end. A downdraft blower reached through the cabinet or ducted under the floor, or the lift motor of a rising vent, moves the job toward the middle.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Tampa Bay island cooktops with a downdraft vent keep its blower in the base cabinet, where humid air and grease wear the motor, so a downdraft that pulls weakly or stops is cleaned and tested before the motor is replaced.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Orlando builder kitchens with downdraft cooktops often have grease clogging the filter and slowing the blower, so the repair clears the filter and checks the motor and the duct under the floor or behind the toe kick.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

South Florida induction cooktops rely on a cooling fan under the glass to protect their boards, and in a humid condo a fan that grinds or runs on long after cooking is replaced before the board overheats.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

New York apartments with a cooktop over an under-counter oven leave little air under the counter, so a cooktop cooling fan that fails there is replaced promptly to protect the controls from heat.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston island cooktops with pop-up downdrafts gather heavy grease from daily cooking, and a vent that stalls on its way up or a blower that hums without moving air is the usual repair.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

In Chicagoland houses with downdraft cooktops the duct often runs down into a basement, and a blower that loses suction may have a blocked duct or a failing motor, both checked on the visit.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Los Angeles remodels place cooktops in islands with telescoping downdrafts, and a vent that will not rise, stops halfway or runs without pulling smoke is repaired at the lift motor or the blower in the cabinet below.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

San Diego cooktops with downdraft blowers near the coast see salt corrode the motor and its switch, and a downdraft that runs constantly or not at all is traced to the switch, the control or the motor.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area induction cooktops paired with downdraft vents draw air for both from the cabinet below, and a cooling fan or blower that fails there is replaced and the cabinet opening checked so air can reach it.

Questions about
the cooktop cooling fan and downdraft repair.

Why does the fan keep running after I switch the cooktop off?
On induction and many touch-control models it is meant to, cooling the boards for several minutes after cooking ends. If it runs much longer, or starts while the cooktop is cold, a temperature sensor or the fan relay is the likely cause.
My downdraft vent will not rise. What can I check?
Make sure nothing on the counter is blocking the panel and that the filter is seated. If the motor hums but the panel stays down, the lift gear or its track has jammed; if nothing happens at all, the switch or the control is tested.
How often should a downdraft filter be cleaned?
Monthly with regular cooking, and more often after frying. A greasy filter slows the airflow, loads the blower and leaves smoke and steam over the counter.
Can a blocked vent under an induction cooktop cause problems?
Yes. If the drawer or cabinet below leaves the intake no room, the boards overheat and the cooktop lowers its power or shuts off. Keep the gap the installation sheet asks for clear of towels and pans.
