Maintenance and prevention,
guide by guide.

These guides cover the care a cooktop needs between service visits: keeping glass-ceramic clean without scratching or pitting it, choosing and handling pans that leave the surface intact, and washing the grate, filter and chamber of a downdraft vent so it keeps pulling smoke away from the counter.

Cleaning a cooktop's downdraft vent: grate, grease filter and chamber

Lifting out the grate and filter, washing them in the sink or the dishwasher, wiping the chamber, setting the filter back at the right angle, and the signs that the blower needs a technician.

Keeping the cooktop out of trouble.

The methods come from the makers' own care instructions, and each guide names the tools to use, the products to keep away from the glass and the mistakes that turn a cleaning job into a repair, such as a sugar spill left to cool or a grease filter set back flat. Because a cooktop sits in a counter above a cabinet, they also cover where water and grease must not go: the seam at the edge of the glass and the blower below a downdraft.

Read them when you first take over a kitchen with a glass or downdraft cooktop, after a bad boil-over, or when a zone starts marking pans or the vent seems weaker than it used to be.

Questions about
maintenance and prevention.

Is regular cleaning enough to avoid cooktop repairs?
It prevents a good share of them. Glass that never meets a dragged pan or a hardened sugar spill stays intact, and a downdraft with a clean, correctly seated filter keeps its blower from working against a wall of grease.
What should every glass cooktop owner keep in a drawer?
A ceramic cooktop cream, a non-scratch pad, a razor scraper with spare blades and a dry cloth. Oven mitts matter too, for lifting a sugary spill off the glass while it is still hot.
Where does owner care stop?
At anything that needs a tool to open. Lift-off grates, filters and the glass surface are yours; the blower, the wiring box, the gas connector and a lifted edge seal are for a technician, with the cooktop switched off at the breaker.
