What it
usually means.
A healthy gas flame is blue with crisp inner cones and runs evenly around the burner. Yellow tips, lazy orange flames or soot on the pans mean the gas is starved of air, most often because the ports are clogged or the cap is off center. A flame that is tall on one side, lifts away from the burner or blows out easily points to blocked ports, a warped cap, or pressure that does not suit the orifices. On a cooktop converted between natural gas and propane, a missed orifice change leaves every burner yellow and oversized. A downdraft vent right beside the burners can also drag flames sideways.
The 6 causes, cheapest first
Answer these first
Is it one burner, or all of them?
Are only the tips yellow, or is the whole flame yellow and lazy?
Does soot collect on pan bottoms or on the grates?
Was the cooktop converted to propane or installed recently?
Does the flame lean when the downdraft is running or a nearby window is open?
Check these
before you book.
Cooktop flame yellow or uneven: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.
If you smell gas along with the poor flame, turn the burners off, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.
Compare every burner: a single poor flame points to its own burner, while every burner misbehaving points to the supply or the conversion.
Once the burner is cold, clean its ports, let it dry and seat the cap flat.
Also worth checking
- Switch the downdraft off or down and watch whether the flame straightens.
- Note any soot on pans or the backsplash and mention it when you book.
How soon does it need a visit?
A yellow flame means incomplete burning and deserves a visit soon, not an emergency response. It turns urgent with a gas odor, soot building up quickly, or a carbon monoxide alarm: shut the burners off, leave, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.

6 things cooktop flame yellow or uneven turns out to be, from clogged burner ports to regulator under the cooktop out of adjustment.
The cost guide-
01 no repair
Clogged burner ports
Grease and boil-overs block some ports and push extra gas out of others, making the flame lopsided. Clean the ports once the burner is cold and let it dry.
-
02 no repair
Dust or humidifier mist in the kitchen air
Airborne dust, a humidifier nearby or spray from cleaning can flash orange in the flame for a while. It clears once the air does.
-
03 no repair
Downdraft vent pulling the flame sideways
A downdraft on high draws air across the cooktop and bends nearby flames. Lower the fan speed and watch whether they straighten.
-
04 low
Burner cap warped by heat
A cap that no longer sits evenly throws flame to one side. One warped by a pan boiled dry is replaced rather than bent back.
-
05 moderate
Orifices that do not match the gas
Natural gas and propane burn through different orifice sizes and a different regulator setting. A missed conversion step leaves flames tall, yellow and sooty on every burner.
-
06 moderate
Regulator under the cooktop out of adjustment
The regulator in the cabinet below sets the pressure every burner sees. One that has failed, or is set for the other gas, makes flames lift, roar or burn weak.
