Smeg cooktops,
specifically.

Smeg sells ceramic (radiant) glass cooktops from 12 to 36 inches, SIMU induction cooktops from 15 to 36 inches, gas cooktops, and front-control gas models that it files under rangetops. Its glass cooktops talk in short 7-segment codes, and the same code can mean one thing on a ceramic top and another on an induction top.

The Smeg lineup

What is particular
to Smeg.

Smeg's US cooktops come in SIMU induction, SEU ceramic and RTU gas families, with retired PGFU gas models still in many kitchens. The family letters on the model plate tell a technician which manual and code set apply.

E2 means two different things

On Smeg's SEU ceramic cooktops E2 means the keys were pressed too long, for example by a pan or a spill; on its SIMU induction cooktops E2 points to an empty or unsuitable pan and a zone that needs to cool. Which cooktop you own decides what the code is telling you.

A showroom setting that stops the heat

The ceramic cooktops have a Showroom option in a secondary menu that keeps the controls lit but switches the heating elements off, with SHO flashing once a minute. A cooktop that lights up and never warms may simply be in this mode.

The 15-second rule on gas

On Smeg gas cooktops, a burner that has not lit within 15 seconds is turned back and left for five minutes before another try, and the knob is held in for a few seconds after lighting so the thermocouple can warm. A burner that keeps failing that routine needs a technician.

Proud, flush or ultra-low

Smeg lists many gas and induction cooktops as proud or flush mounted, while its ceramic tops use an ultra-low profile. A flush-mounted cooktop sits in a routed ledge in the counter, so lifting it for a repair takes more care than a drop-in.

Parts

Glass tops, touch boards and coils are specific to each Smeg model, and parts for retired gas models such as the PGFU series can take longer to find. A second visit is sometimes needed once a part has been ordered.

Repair or replace

Replacing an igniter, thermocouple, element or control board is usually worth doing on a Smeg cooktop. Because the cooktop is fitted to its cutout, and flush models to a routed ledge, a replacement also has to match that opening, which weighs in favor of repair while the glass is sound.

Questions about
Smeg cooktops.

My Smeg cooktop lights up but will not heat. Why?
Look for SHO flashing once a minute: on Smeg's ceramic cooktops that means Showroom mode, where the elements stay off. The setting is changed in the secondary menu described in the manual; if there is no SHO and nothing heats, book a visit.
Why won't my Smeg gas burner stay lit?
Hold the knob in for a few seconds after the flame appears so the thermocouple can heat up; Smeg says the burner may go out if it is released too soon. If a burner does not light within 15 seconds, turn it off and wait five minutes before trying again, and book a visit if it keeps happening.
What should I do if my Smeg glass cooktop cracks?
Smeg says to switch the appliance off and disconnect the power straight away. Do not cook on it; turn the breaker off and book a visit.
Why does my Smeg breaker keep tripping when I use the cooktop?
Smeg's own advice for fuses or a breaker that trip repeatedly is to get service or an electrician. Leave the breaker off and book a visit so the cooktop and its supply can be checked.
