Viking cooktops,
specifically.

Viking lists gas, electric and induction cooktops from 30 to 45 inches, and rangetops for a base cabinet in gas, electric and induction. On its gas tops every burner sparks back to life if the flame goes out, and its electric touch-control tops report problems as an F plus a second letter.

The Viking lineup

What is particular
to Viking.

Viking's current cooktops run from the 3 Series to the 5 Series and the Designer and Professional lines, with separate manuals for gas, electric and induction. The model plate tells us which manual, keypad and burner parts fit.

Rangetops in three fuels

Viking builds rangetops not only in gas but also in electric and induction versions, all meant to sit on a base cabinet with front controls. Before a visit we confirm which fuel the rangetop uses, because the parts behind the knobs are entirely different.

Clicking before the flame

Viking's gas cooktop manual says the igniters may click several times before a burner lights, and that the burners relight on their own if the flame goes out. A few clicks at start-up are normal; clicking that never stops once the flame is steady is not.

F codes on electric tops

On Viking's touch-control electric cooktops, the control shuts off every element when it finds an electronics problem and shows F with a second letter in the timer window. The letter separates a key problem from a sensor, relay or communication problem.

Zones share their power

Viking's 5 Series induction cooktops pair elements into shared zones, so boosting one element turns down its partner. A pan that heats slowly while the element beside it is on high is often power sharing, not a failing coil.

Parts

Igniters, burner caps and knobs for current gas tops are common repair parts. Keypads and boards for older Designer electric cooktops may need to be sourced before or after the first visit.

Repair or replace

A Viking gas top with sound valves usually repairs well, since igniters, spark modules and caps are ordinary parts. For an older electric touch-control top, replacement is worth weighing when both the keypad and the power board have failed.

Questions about
Viking cooktops.

Why does my Viking gas cooktop click a few times before it lights?
Viking says the igniters may click several times before the burner catches, and calls that normal. Book a visit if the clicking goes on after the flame is steady, or if a burner will not light at all.
My Viking electric cooktop shut off and shows an F with a letter. What happened?
That is the control's self-check: it stops every element and shows F plus a letter that names the problem, such as FA for a key or Fc for overheating. Note the exact letters, let the top cool, and book a visit if the code comes back.
Why did one element on my Viking induction cooktop turn down by itself?
On the 5 Series, two elements share one power zone, so boosting one element reduces the other. Moving one pan to a different zone usually brings full power back.
What does the L on my Viking induction cooktop mean?
On the MVIC induction cooktop, an L above each control and on the timer means the child lock is on. Unlock it with the key lock and pause keys as the manual describes; no repair is needed.
