Monogram cooktops,
specifically.

Monogram is GE Appliances' luxury badge, with gas cooktops trimmed in brass and sapphire, induction and radiant glass cooktops, and professional gas rangetops that can carry an infrared grill or a griddle. The rangetops and gas cooktops use stacked dual-flame burners, which changes how a technician reads a flame problem.

The Monogram lineup

What is particular
to Monogram.

Monogram sells 30- and 36-inch gas, radiant and induction cooktops and 36- and 48-inch professional rangetops with four or six burners plus a grill or griddle. The rangetop's grill and griddle have their own igniters and gas controls, separate from the open burners.

Two flames in every burner

Monogram's rangetop and stainless gas cooktop burners have a lower simmer flame and an upper main flame stacked together, and the lower one always lights and stays on. A burner that simmers but will not rise, or rises but will not simmer, points to one of the two flame paths.

Brass that is meant to darken

Monogram builds its gas cooktop burners from brass and says heat discoloration on them needs neither service nor cleaning. Owners sometimes book a visit for the color alone; a technician looks at flame shape instead.

Grill and griddle stay off in an outage

The rangetop's infrared grill and griddle use glowing Glo-Bar igniters that stay on during use, and Monogram says gas to them shuts off when the power fails. The open burners can still be lit with a match; the grill and griddle cannot.

Drafts can make it spark

Monogram burners relight on their own, and its manual notes that a draft at the lowest setting can push the flame off the sensor and start the igniter sparking. Turning down or redirecting a nearby fan is Monogram's first step before any repair.

Parts

Glo-Bar igniters, brass burner parts and sapphire crystal knobs are Monogram-specific and may need ordering. Induction boards and glass tops are matched to the exact model.

Repair or replace

Monogram rangetops and cooktops are long-lived, and burner, igniter, valve and board repairs are almost always worth doing. Replacement is usually only discussed for cracked glass on an older induction or radiant unit.

Questions about
Monogram cooktops.

Why are the brass burners on my Monogram cooktop turning dark?
Monogram says the brass discolors with heat and that this needs no service or cleaning. If you prefer the original look, its manual describes soaking and cleaning the brass parts.
Why does my Monogram rangetop spark on low when the fan is running?
Monogram's burners relight automatically, and a draft can push a low flame away from the flame sensor. Turn down or redirect the fan; if sparking continues in still air, book a visit.
Can I use my Monogram rangetop grill during a power outage?
No. Monogram says the grill and griddle gas shuts off when the power fails. The open burners can be lit carefully with a match.
Why does my Monogram cooktop lock itself after a while?
Monogram's electronic cooktops have an Auto Lock setting, shown as C12 in the custom settings, that locks the controls after 10 minutes in standby. Switch it to C11 if you prefer to lock by hand.
