What is particular
to Miele.

Miele's US cooktops include 24- to 42-inch induction models, 30- to 42-inch gas cooktops with wok burners, 30- and 36-inch electric cooktops, and KMR rangetops from 36 to 48 inches. Some induction models work with M Sense cookware, which adds its own messages.

Half an inch below the cooktop matters

Miele asks for at least 1/2 inch between the bottom of an induction cooktop and a shelf or oven below. When that gap is missing, the fan codes FE47 to FE49 appear, and they only clear after power is disconnected.

Two styles of code

Older Miele induction cooktops show F and FE codes in the zone displays; newer ones flash Err with a number in the timer display. The same kind of problem can look different depending on the generation.

Rangetops with a griddle or grill

Miele's rangetops come with six or eight burners, or with a griddle plate or grill in place of some burners. The griddle or grill section is tested separately from the burners.

A flashing light on an LP cooktop

On a Miele gas cooktop, a flashing in-operation indicator means liquid propane is not arriving. Miele's first steps are to open the gas safety valve and reset the knobs.

Parts

Miele parts are matched to the model and fabrication number on the data plate. Induction power modules and rangetop burner parts may need to be ordered.

Repair or replace

Built-in Miele cooktops and rangetops are usually worth repairing, especially when the problem is a fan, a sensor control or ignition. Replacement comes up when an older induction unit needs several major parts together.

Miele says the fan keeps running until the cooktop has cooled, and may come back on briefly if residual heat is still high.
