GE cooktops,
specifically.

GE-badged cooktops are the plain end of GE Appliances' lineup: built-in gas cooktops and radiant electric cooktops with either knobs or touch keys, while GE's built-in induction models carry the Profile name. Many are simple, knob-driven units, so a visit usually turns on a switch, an igniter or an element rather than on software.

The GE lineup

What is particular
to GE.

GE-badged cooktops come in 30- and 36-inch built-in gas and radiant electric versions, the electrics in knob-control and touch-control styles. Knob models use switches behind each knob, touch models a control board, so the style decides which parts a technician brings.

A lock knob, not just a lock key

Several GE cooktops, gas and knob-control electric, have a separate control lock knob with its own indicator light. On the gas models the lock blocks the gas while the igniters keep sparking, which is easy to mistake for a failed igniter.

Knobs push down before they turn

GE's gas cooktop knobs have to be pushed down to leave the Off position. A knob that spins or will not turn is often being turned without the push, and GE also lets the knobs go in the dishwasher, so a knob refitted crooked on its shaft is worth checking before any part is ordered.

Two left elements that act as one

GE's touch-control radiant cooktops can link the two left elements with a Sync Burners key, meant for the optional griddle. If only one of the pair heats in sync mode, the diagnosis starts at the element that stayed cold, not at the griddle.

F codes are for the technician

GE's own support article describes its cooktop F codes as a technician's tool and does not list their meanings. A 30-second breaker reset is the only home step GE offers; after that, the code you wrote down speeds up the visit.

Parts

Igniters, burner caps, infinite switches and radiant elements for GE cooktops are common stock items. Touch control boards and glass tops are matched to the model number and can take longer to arrive.

Repair or replace

On a GE gas or knob-control cooktop, most repairs involve one burner part or one switch and are worth doing. A cracked glass top on an older radiant unit, or a failed touch board on a discontinued model, is where comparing with a new cooktop makes sense.

Questions about
GE cooktops.

Why does my GE gas cooktop click but never light?
Check the lock light first: GE's gas cooktops with a lock knob block the gas while the igniters still spark. If the cooktop is unlocked, a wet or dirty electrode or a burner cap that is not seated are the next suspects, and GE's manual lists both.
What does an F code on my GE cooktop mean?
GE does not publish individual meanings for its cooktop F codes. Write the code down, switch the breaker off for 30 seconds, and book a visit if it comes back.
Can I put GE cooktop knobs in the dishwasher?
GE's gas cooktop manual says the knobs can be washed by hand or in a dishwasher once pulled straight up in the Off position. Push them fully back on the valve shafts afterward, lining up the hole on the back of each knob.
Why does my locked GE cooktop beep?
On GE's knob-control electric cooktops, the lock sounds a tone whenever a knob is turned away from Off while locked. Return the knob to Off or unlock the cooktop.
