What is particular

Maytag cooktops come in 30- and 36-inch gas, radiant electric and induction versions, some gas models with a DuraGuard protective finish. Maytag's electric cooktop codes follow the same F, FC and C families as its Whirlpool sister brand.

Maytag sells radiant electric cooktops with a reversible grill and griddle. Heavy accessories spanning two zones put long, even heat into the glass, so overheat codes and hot-surface warnings on these models are often use-related.

Pan size matters to Maytag's shutoff

Maytag's C82 page asks for flat, medium-to-heavy pans whose base is within half an inch of the cooking area, and warns against empty or boiled-dry pans. Get that wrong and the automatic shutoff trips, which looks like a failed element but is not.

A Power burner on the gas models

Maytag's gas cooktops are named for their Power burner, a high-output burner for fast boiling. When that burner lights weakly or unevenly, the cap and ports are checked first, because a large burner is the most sensitive to a misaligned cap.

Induction with little published help

Maytag sells induction cooktops with Power Boost, but the Maytag help center we read has error-code pages for electric cooktops only. For an induction Maytag, the display code and model number are what a technician needs.

Why does my Maytag cooktop shut a zone off with a small pot?
Maytag asks for a pan base within half an inch of the cooking area's size. A much smaller or empty pot lets the zone overheat and trips the automatic shutoff, often shown as C82.
Can I use the Maytag grill and griddle on any zone?
Use it where Maytag's instructions place it for your model. Because it spreads heat across a wide area, hot-surface warnings last longer afterward, which is normal.
Does Maytag list codes for its induction cooktops?
The Maytag help center we read covers electric cooktop codes only. For an induction model, note the code and model number and book a visit.
What does U mean on my Maytag cooktop?
Maytag lists three meanings: no pan detected, Keep Warm switched on, or a power supply problem. The first two are normal; if a reset does not clear the third, book a visit.
