Whirlpool cooktops,
specifically.

Whirlpool sells everyday gas, radiant electric and induction cooktops, many of them meant to sit above a wall oven. Its help center publishes a long list of cooktop codes with a one-minute breaker reset as the first step, which makes a Whirlpool code one of the easier ones to act on before booking.

The Whirlpool lineup

What is particular
to Whirlpool.

Whirlpool's cooktops span 30- and 36-inch gas models, starter-to-premium radiant electrics and a newer line of induction cooktops. Codes on the radiant and induction models follow different families, F and C codes on radiant, E and F0E codes on induction, so the type matters when reading one.

Made to share a cabinet with an oven

Whirlpool markets its electric cooktops as compatible with a wall oven below. That arrangement shares the cabinet's air, and Whirlpool's own C81/C83 page tells owners to switch off a running oven and clear the space under the cooktop when it overheats.

Hinged grates on the gas models

Whirlpool's EZ-2-Lift cast-iron grates tilt up on hinges so you can wipe beneath them without lifting them off. A grate that no longer sits flat after cleaning can tip pans and throw the flame off center, so it is checked before the burner.

An induction power limit hidden in setup

Some Whirlpool induction cooktops have a PL setting that caps total power, and Whirlpool says a low cap holds zones and boost below what you choose. It survives power outages, so a cooktop that suddenly boils slowly may just be set low.

Codes with a first step included

Whirlpool's help center lists dozens of cooktop codes, and nearly every page opens with the same home step: the breaker off for one minute and back on, then a minute of watching. A code that survives that reset is the one to report when booking.

Parts

Igniters, burner heads, grates and radiant elements for Whirlpool cooktops are widely stocked. Touch controls, induction modules and glass tops are model-specific and may require an order.

Repair or replace

A Whirlpool cooktop with one failed element, igniter or switch is a clear repair. When a mid-range radiant unit needs both a new glass top and a control board, replacement is worth comparing.

Questions about
Whirlpool cooktops.

Why does my Whirlpool cooktop overheat only when the oven below is on?
The oven shares the cabinet space the cooktop uses to shed heat. Whirlpool's C81/C83 page tells owners to turn the oven off and check for anything blocking airflow under the cooktop.
Why is my Whirlpool induction cooktop slower than it used to be?
Check the PL power-limit setting. Whirlpool says a low limit caps the zones and some boost functions, and the setting stays in memory after an outage.
What should I do first when a code appears on my Whirlpool cooktop?
Whirlpool's usual first step is to switch the breaker off for one minute, restore it and watch the cooktop for another minute. If the code returns, note it and book a visit.
Why would a brand-new Whirlpool induction cooktop light up but never heat?
If the display shows d E, it is in demo mode. Whirlpool's help center describes holding the Booster key for five seconds within a minute of restoring power to switch it off.
